THE DJ DIARY
Music Scene: All in a Weekend with Blu

I arrived in Cancun and began a week vacation combined with a weekend of work.
Ahhhh!…the heat there was nothing like the hot Mexican sun beating down on me as I arrived to perform again at my favorite club in Cancun, Nectar.
Thursday night was my first night there and ironically the wedding of a couple of good friends of mine, Shane and Cabrina. I landed pretty much into the tail end of their wedding. They were staying across the street from my hotel and I was DJing at their wedding at a club called, Pacha.
Yes, that‘s right I’ve played at Pacha! Well, Pacha Cancun that is. Not quite what you expect from Pacha, especially when they’re using cherries as their trademark. The place only holds 200 people but we all seemed to have an awesome time, making it our own party, until it opened to the public and they put the Hip Hop DJ on.
Then we went to the well known Mego-Club Coco Bongo and watched Spiderman hang from the ceiling and Michael Jackson perform “Billie Jean” for 2000 screaming tourists and then later we headed over to Nectar where you can hear the best music in Cancun and to my surprise there was a giant billboard with an infamous pic of me I call, “Shirt Off”!
Friday came before I realized it and my gig was great. Friends came out who were from the wedding as this was their last night in town so we decided to make it a good one. The concept of Nectar is really cool it’s a completely outdoor club with a small indoor area blasting AC when you get too hot or when it rains. The DJ booth is stationed on the beach in front of the Cancun Lagoon which is a beautiful sight to see when you are looking onward to the DJ (especially when the sun is coming up). The dancefloor is the beach and the sand!
One of my favorite parts of the night was when George Skorsis from Red Bull Canada showed up out of the blue and came to see my show. The party was a blast Friday and it wasn’t even the big Saturday night yet!
On Saturday night I had a good friend of mine open for me, Cesar Bass Romero who is a resident DJ at Red Lite in Montreal and is doing the official Bal en Blanc CD this year and is the resident of Nectar. I went on around 4a.m. and played until almost 6a.m. and then the beautiful Mexican sun rose and the heat came down like a hot lamp on my head. We decided to move the DJ booth into the air conditioned area and started playing back to back. Of course then champagne came out in the morning and when it was over it was almost 10a.m. I went back to my hotel exhausted but with a smile on my face. The night was amazing!
I spent the rest of my vacation relaxing. As I never get a vacation, this was important to me. I needed the rest and on the last day I was there I went snorkeling. It was so much fun. I love playing in Mexico because it’s a great way to relax and have a blast working at the same time. If you are ever in Cancun I highly suggest checking out Nectar. It has the best music (not cheese) and they definitely know what underground is.
