Feet Workin' for Pendulum
Theory Presents: Pendulum @ Footwork
By: Mary Jane

If you drive too quickly down Adelaide you’ll miss Footwork. I’ve been to Footwork a half-dozen or so times and I still had to map quest leaving to catch Theory’s presentation of Pendulum, one of the hottest and most well-known D’n’B acts in the world today.

I know I found the place due to the hard pumping sounds of opener DJ D-Syfa. With an impressive mastery over the mixer, plenty of original tunes and a real talent for mixing chillingly beautiful vocal tracks with dark, Techy bone shakers (not to mention his eye catching good looks), D-syfa really connected with the crowd early on as the bar began rapidly filling up.

Until around the time Pendulum took over the decks the party was beginning to look a bit like a sausage-fest with at least four guys to every lady. This disproportionate amount of men gave me plenty of time to bask in the glory of being one of the attractive, costumed women in a sea of cute boys!

Pendulum

After watching a pulse building introduction my headliner MC Verse and Pendulum’s epic opening from my favourite spot at every party (between the DJ booth and the biggest speaker of course) I got slightly frightened by a sweaty monstrosity of a dude who looked a bit like an emaciated Terminator decided it was time to go outside for a smoke.

The patio is contained within the same alley that hides Footwork from plain sight. This is both a good and a bad thing as it creates a real sense of underground intimacy while at the same making for cramped quarters. No liquor license for this patio Scenesters, sorry.

By the time I got back inside the jam was a regular bounce fest. Footwork was absolutely rammed making it difficult to get back to the DJ booth as the shape of the club is rather like a bottleneck getting impossibly slim in the middle. This sucked for mobility but them again, once Pendulum started dropping his big tunes I was putting my hands up and bouncing…which I did, as hard as my little legs would allow.

MC Verse continued to keep it live without saying too much, which was great. There is nothing more irritating than an MC who doesn’t know when to shut up and let the DJ set the tone. For those who like hard rockin tunes laced with base and minus female vocals, this jam was for you. I hope you were there. If not, you should definitely check out Pendulum at your earliest convenience!
