SCENE REVIEWS
Daft Punk
Review by: Josh Shannahan
When I was in 8th grade my first experience of what high school would be like was a fashion show I went to see. Coming from school assemblies where entertainment was based on sing-a-longs and trophy presentations the idea of putting on a show just because it looked cool was pretty new to me.
The lights go down, the room fills up with smoke and just as the models hit the stage the music blasts, “wooowwwwwww- wow- wow- wa- wooowwwww, wow-wow-wa-wooowwww, wow-wow-wa-wooowwwwwwwwww, wow-wow!”
Holy Shit! Where did this tune come from? Da Funk hit me heavier than 10 ACME anvils falling on Wile E. Coyote’s head!
The human mind is a bitch. How often is it you spend so much time anticipating something that when it happens you have this feeling inside which tells you it can’t possibly live up to the expectations you’ve set for it? Unless you’re seeing daft punk.
The night I got to experience daft punk’s performance was the culminating moment for an entire generation. daft punk acted as the doorway for me into electronic music, which has now become one of my greatest passions.
At this daft punk show it was obvious not only was this the thing I (and electronic music fans across the province) had been waiting for, it was bringing fans together from all different genres of music. Rock, Pop, Dance, Electronic…it didn’t matter, daft punk put on a show that was for fans of music!!
Playing atop a pyramid dressed in their finest robot gear, daft punk played their hits to generations of people that had been waiting for them for a long time. What seems hard to believe is that they managed to come up with a stage show that could match the intensity of the music visually.
In a performance that had to live up to a decade’s worth of anticipation and satisfy the ears of music listeners across normally clashing genres, daft punk reminded everyone just how incredible music really is.
