SCENE CHARTS - Top 5

Deko-ze bio

Deko-ze’s February Top 5

1. JOEY SEMINARA & DANNY NAGELS ft. MC FLIPSIDE ¬ - Just The Tip * Hatiras
remix (Hi-Bias)
This tune is MASSIVE! Hatiras provides a chuggy, bassy remix and dub that has been destroying the floors every time I play it! Plus, the Original and Custodian mixes are doin' the biz too. This will be out on Hi-Bias Records and will also be featured on their upcoming compilation CD I have mixed. "CANADA'S FINEST: DANCE" also features fresh new tracks and remixes from Deadmau5, MV, Deko-ze n' Gavo, Addy, M1, Cajjmere Wray and several more Canuck faves!

2. D-FORMATION ¬ - Shameless (Beat Freak)
This has already been getting massive support from Deep Dish, Simon & Shaker, Marco V, DJ Chus, Hernan Catteneo and many more of the world's heavyhitters!

3. MARK BROWN FT SARAH CRACKNELL ¬ - The Journey Continues * Mickey Slim /
Thomas Gold
I just about fell off my chair when I heard Mark Brown (who has done production work for Amy Winehouse) was doing a track with St. Etienne vocalist, Sarah Cracknell. The Original version will crack the UK Top 20 and the dance remixes from Slim and Gold are already rockin¹ it!

4. RALPH FALCON ¬ - The Dig * Original / Umek / Radio Slave remixes
(Renaissance)
This is so dark and brooding, you can almost feel your boots sinking into the muck. Falcon's "Break You" is also tearin¹ up dancefloors worldwide but "The Dig" is meant to take things deeper…A LOT deeper.

5. DEKO-ZE VS DJS RULE ¬ - Feel Love * Hatiras remix (Hi-Bias)
This remix funks things up! Also, watch out for the Deko-ze remix and Dub, plus remixes from Montreal¹s Marco G and Toronto¹s Cajjmere Wray!

BURIED TREASURE!

DEPECHE MODE ¬ - Master & Servant * Slavery Whip 12² mix (1984)

Most people know this incredible band for tracks like “Enjoy The Silence’, ³Personal Jesus”, “Policy Of Truth” and “Strangelove”. If you dig a little further, you will also find gems like ³Master & Servant². It was danceable, sadistic, taunting and made many boy and girl blush. I¹ve taken to play some of the new mixes but respect must also be paid to this fantastic Original.

Deko-ze’s January Top 5

DEKO-ZE¹S JANUARY BUZZ CUTZ ¬ BPM TV!
(PPM Promotions, Hi-Bias Records, Balance Record Pool, Music2Mix Pool, ZipDJ Pool, Scenester Magazine, Guvernment, Comfort Zone, Footwork, Straight (Toronto), Parking (Montreal)

1. CHUS & CEBALLOS ¬ Go On * Tek mix (Stereo)
I remember the first time I heard Danny Tenaglia¹s ³Dibiza² and I thoughts³WHOA!! This is going to be heee-yuge!!² Not only was it a great track but you could just visualise SO much as the track rampaged itself through your head! This is the sort of track that sounds like its going to jump out of the speakers!! Beware!!

2. DJ GROOVY ¬ End Of The World * Tribalishious remix (Knob)
US label, Knob, has been bangin¹ out SICK tribal for years! Whether it¹s sexy Lexicon Avenue style progginess, or Tenaglia murkiness or Rooster & Peralta style bangers you¹re after, search out Knob. The Tribalishious mix of the new DJ Groovy track is wicked!

3. MARCO G & DJ KAL ¬ Apologise * Way Up High Mashup mix (white)
It has been a LONG time since I have had SO many people ¬ clubbers and djs ¬ asking about this remix! Montreal¹s Marco G & DJ Kal do a mash-up of One Republic¹s ³Apologise² and their remix of Kevin Sunray¹s ³Way Up High². MASSIVE!!!

4. DR. KUCHO ¬ Macamba (Disc Doctor)
Timeless. This could have been made in 2004, 1997 or yesterday. The beats are rollin¹, the Spanish guitar reminds of the summer time boat cruise crowd where everyone is cruising all the hot boys and girls and the break is a deep, soothing scene that is taken right from the ones of those ³eyes closed / I¹m immersed in the music ¬ fuck time and space² moments!

5. DEKO-ZE VS DJS RULE ¬ Feel Love * Deko-ze & Fierce remix (Hi-Bias)
Back in 1996, ³Feel Love² was a huge underground hit for Canadian label Hi-Bias. So, as I dug through the Hi-Bias back catalogue and found this, I thought it would be suiting to bring this back for Œ08. This slow burner has been getting wicked reaction! Also, beware of a chunky and punky Deko-ze Mix and Dub, PLUS further remixes from Montreal¹s Marco G and Toronto¹s Cajjmere Wray!

Deko-ze December Top 5

1. STONEBRIDGE ¬ “You Don¹t Know * Hott 22 mix (Egoiste)
Catchy? Yes. Floor filler? Yes. A little commercial? Yes. But is it damn good? You bet!

2. D-FORMATION & DAVID FERRERO ¬ “What You Want” (Yoshitoshi)
OMG! Ridiculous. D-Formation is one of the only people who could make a 3 note melody sound SOOO deceiving, sneaky and rewarding! Top Tribal with five outstanding mixes!

3. MIKA ¬ “Love Today” Switch remix (Casablanca)
There was a track called ³Love Today² that was prancing about and giggling like a school girl. From around a dark alley, Switch emerged, bent ³Love Today² over, poked the cheese out of it and spat some thuggish dirty rips in its face!

4. DEKO-ZE VS DJS RULE ¬ “Feel Love” ‘07 * Deko-ze & Fierce remix (Hi-Bias)
Back in 1996, ³Feel Love² was a huge underground hit for Canadian label Hi-Bias. So, as I dug through the Hi-Bias back catalogue and found this, I thought it would be suiting to bring this back for ‘07. This slow burner has been getting wicked reaction! Also, beware of a chunky and punky Deko-ze Mix and Dub, PLUS further remixes from Montreal¹s Marco G and Toronto¹s Cajjmere Wray!

5. DEADMAU5 & JELO ¬ “The Reward Is Cheese” (Rising)
I witnessed a dancer¹s head pop clean off when this track was working its assault!

November – Deko-ze Top 5

1. LAIDBACK LUKE ¬– “Rockin¹ with the Best” (Rene Amesz mix (Mixmash)
Now this is some funky shit!

2. BORIQUA TRIBEZ ¬ “Travolta* Cave remix (Adult)
When you see me bouncing frantically in the booth, working the EQs like my life depended on it and shaking my ass, 'cuz its why my momma gave it to me, is because this techno stomper is raging through the woofers!!

3. KLEERUP FT ROBYN ¬ With Every Heartbeat (Pete Tong & Dave Spoon remix (EMI)

WAIT!!!! Don¹t run off! Yes, this is the same Robyn who did that wretched euro-cheese pile of plop ³Do You Know What It Takes² from years back. ³With Every Heartbeat² makes up for that disaster and SOOO much more!! This has been a favorite track of mine for months! And Yes, I do love the sound of her vocal (whereas Wade thinks it sounds like Kate Bush on acid. You decide...)

4. DEKO-ZE VS DJS RULE ¬– “Feel Love” Œ 07 (Hi-Bias)
Back in 1996, ³Feel Love² was a huge underground hit for Canadian label Hi-Bias. So, as I dug through the Hi-Bias back catalogue and found this, I thought it would be suiting to bring this back for Œ07. This slow burner has been getting wicked reaction! Also, beware of a chunky and punky Deko-ze n¹ Gavo mix, PLUS further remixes from Montreal¹s Marco G and Toronto¹s Cajjmere Wray!

5. SHAPESHIFTERS ¬ - “A New Day* (Nocturnal mix (Positiva)
One of the best uplifting house tracks in a while! It¹s not quite ³Lola¹s Theme² but is a VERY close second!!

Deko-ze September Top 10

1. KLEERUP FT ROBYNWith Every Heartbeat (Pete Tong & Dave Spoon remix) (EMI)
THE Vocal track of the year so far!  This has been melting the hearts of even the most hardened of clubbers!

2. DAVID PADLEY & CHRIS SPECIAL - Terrace Attack (Pionner Attack mix) (Suesse)
WOW!  The thievery continues!!  This time these guys are trying very hard to sound like another particular pair of producers.  However, this is still one helluva funky, glitchy tune!

3. SHAPESHIFTERS - A New Day (Nocturnel mix) (Positiva)
OK, it¹s not quite ³Lola¹s Theme² but it is VERY close second.  This went over like a dream during my Sunrise set at the ³Labour Of Love² jam in the Skybar of Guvernment!!

4. TRACEY THORN - Grand Canyon (King Unique mix) (3D)
Tracey is one the timeless cross generational voices of English pop, folk and dance!  She is also the voice behind Everything But The Girl.  Grand Canyon is the latest single from her excellent ³Out Of The Woods² album!

5. JDOT & DUMB DAN - Guess I¹m Dumb (Dumb) / DUMBEST Dirty Beat
I don¹t know who Dumb Dan is but I do know that him and his label have been knocking out the goods for a while.  Yes, more dirty electro but there are no loud, abrasive, disassociative sounds or nasty farty bass.  These are catchy tune that are bound to get stuck in your head.

6. DJ CHUS pres. PETE THA ZOUK - There Is A God (Stereo)
Think Tenaglia¹s ³Bottom Heavy² and you¹ll get the picture!

7. MARK KNIGHT - Party Animal (Rene Amesz remix) (Toolroom)
This juddering rude bassline track has been ruling my floor for months now!

8. DONALD GLAUDE - Big (Bug Eyed)
Donald Glaude has been one of my all time favorite djs for over 10 years. Period.  Like Carl Cox, he is a massive force to be reckoned with when he gets behind the decks.  So, it is no surprise that his latest treat for the ears and feet is ³BIG²!!!!

9. PQM PROJECT - The Shit They Love EP (Abducted)
Prince Quick mix was behind the brilliant tracks ³You Are Sleeping² that came out on Yoshitoshi a few years back, the Led Zeppelin sampling ³Babe, I¹m Gonna Leave You² and Steve Lawler¹s ³Rise In².  This entire ep is progressive brilliance from the start and the standout track ³Shit Just Stays The Same² is simply timeless.  For fans of Sasha & Digweed, Nick Warren and Traffic.

10. AVALON SUPERSTAR So Alive * Playmaker dub (Groove Factory)
Some of you aren¹t really into all the dark sounds that have been ruling today¹s club floors.  Menacing minor chords with massive amounts of delay and reverb just isn¹t for everyone.  Avalon Superstar have come to the rescue with a fun, uplifting yet driving track.  The Dub reminds me of the Mark Picchioti remix of Sunscreem¹s classic ³Secrets² from 1995!

Top 5 Chart – August

1. DJ CHUS pres. PETE THA ZOUK - There Is A God (Stereo)
Hands down, one of THE best  Stereo tracks in a while.  Still doin¹ the biz!

2. MARK KNIGHT - Party Animal (Rene Amesz remix) - Toolroom
This juddering rude bassline track has been ruling my floor for months now!

3. D-FORMATION & CARLOS MANACA - Sexy Sheet - Beat Freak
Sheeshh.. Yet another amazing D-Formation track on the ever reliable Beat Freak label from Spain.  Your gast will be well and truly flabbered!

4. AVALON SUPERSTAR - So Alive (Playmaker dub) - Groove Factory

5. PQM - The Shit They Love EP - Abducted
PQM is one of the only dance artists who faithfully re-made Led Zeppelin¹s ³Babe, I¹m Gonna Leave You² into something even more stunning!  He was also the key influence behind Steve Lawler¹s ³Rise In².  ³The Shit They Love EP² amazingly follows the same high standard!  This is forward thinking music for those with more refined tastes.  WOW!

Top 5 Chart – July

1. DJ CHUS pres. PETE THA ZOUK There Is A God (Stereo)
I have been into the Stereo label for years but this is not only THE best Stereo track I¹ve heard in a while, it is one of THE best, period! Reminds me of the classic Tenaglia sound around the time of ³Bottom Heavy² and his remix of ³So Get Up².

2. MARK KNIGHT Party Animal * Rene Amesz remix (Toolroom)
Both these guys are at the top of their game!

3. MISJAH What Is? (Craft)
This is the sort of track that makes me put down my headphones and dance like a fiend!

4. CITY ZEN Beautiful * Jamie Fanatic remix (Sirup)
I can just envision Fanatic wearing a chef¹s hat in the studio. He chops, slices and dices like a madman. He serves the dish with exquisite presentation but then gives you the cold stare from the kitchen the minute you¹re done so he can give your table to the next lucky customer!

5. OSCAR L I Like It EP (Underground Sound Of Madrid)
³All people on this Earth are truly one² the sample says. ³Damn right!² I say!

BURIED TREASURE - LOGAN CIRCLE Disco Life * Sharp Remix (1997)

I found this gem while doing some record shopping before a gig in Forty Wayne, Indiana. It was nestled quietly amongst that week¹s new releases.

The label looked cool so I gave it a listen. From the moment the needle fell into the groove, I had to have it and it STILL is a weapon of mine.
I call it ³thug-fucking house². It¹s well, thuggish, juddering, driving tribal that rips through the speakers! This truly stands the test of time and always has djs and party fiends charging at the booth to find out what this is!!

Top 5 Chart – June

1.DJ CHUS & PETER GELDERBLOM – Join Ur Hands (Stereo)
A full on, tribal-electro-tech stormer!  You should expect nothing but top quality from these fantastic producers!! The package also comes with Rene Amesz, Rob Mirage and Koki remixes!

2. AXWELL, SEBASTIAN INGROOSO, STEVE ANGELLO – Get Dumb * Mark Knight Dub Ray Dub (Special Projects)
The Original falls into the “This is so dumb, its great!” category.  Mark Knight showed up and gave this a swift kick in the ass!  Mind numbing.

3. MARTIJN TEN VELDEN – I Wish * remixes (AATW)
I didn’t think remixes of this huge hit from late last year but Leutzenkirchen, Whelan & Di Scala, Tom Novy and Hook & Sling do it up right!!   (Thank you DJ JB for bringing this goodie to my attention!)

4. DUBFIRE – Roadkill (Toolroom)
Dubfire is one half of Deep Dish who have serving up the goods for well over a decade.  This solo track, however, is not something you would expect.  It’s a nasty blast of driving techno fused with house and electro sensibilities.

5. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS – By The Way * Peter Gelderblom & Rene Amesz mix (Warner)
Yes, many dance versions of rock tracks need to be quickly flushed down the toilet.  This one, however, is DA shit!

BURIED TREASURE - PRIMAL SCREAM – Don’t Fight It, Feel It (1990)

In the late 80s / early 90s, indie / dance groups like The Soup Dragons, The Farm and Stereo MCs had huge crossover hits on both sides of the pond.  Primal Scream were right in the thick of it and their “Screamadelica” album is a must have for fans of the sound that was “now”.  “Don’t Fight It, Feel It” was a snapshot of the UK dance scene’s e-fueled culture in its wondrous totality.  And it still sounds damn good today!

Top 5 Chart – May

1. DAVE SPOON – “Background Noise” (Toolroom)
The latest from Spoon blips, bleeps and tears holes through the speakers! Killah!

2. D.O.N.S. – “Big Fun” * Dave Spoon mix (Kontor)
Another year, another 297 remixes of Inner City¹s classic ³Big Fun². Germany¹s D.O.N.S. Who already hit big with the remix of Technotronic¹s ³Pump Up The Jam² brings ³.. Fun² back to life.  Man of the Moment, Dave Spoon, provides the funked up remix !  Wicked!

3. MARK KNIGHT & D. RAMIREZ - “Columbian Soul”
Four months on and this is still twackin¹ it for me! It¹s a tough, driving mutha of a track that is rippin¹ people¹s heads off and making NO apologies!

4. TIMMY & TOMMY - “Rapture” * Discount Rhinos remix (Queep Organic)
Fierce, seductive tribal retouch of Blondie¹s massive 80¹s hit!  Has been going over like a dream for the str8 and gay crowds at Parking in Montreal, Guvernment and Comfort Zone in Toronto.

5. MIC PERRI - “Have A Nice Day” * Jaimie Fanatic remix (PBR)
MC Flipside, has been a staple of the Canadian Dance music scene for well over a decade.  Him and long time partner, Freaky Flow have toured the world causing serious damage.  Nowadays you can catch him spinning sexy, chunky house.  He also records under the name Mic Perri.  The latest sees mixes from M1, John Pegnato, Ron Resser & Dan Soemz, KMFX and a jackin¹ re-rub from Fanatic. It¹s like Switch on crack (and I mean that in a very good way!)

BURIED TREASURE - SHAMEN ENTACT (Sony / One Little Indian) - 1990

The Shamen took life in Scotland in 1986 and its founders were Colin Angus and Will Sin.  Two years later, they moved to London in time for the “Summer Of Love” ripe with warehouse raves and illegal clubs.  The soundtrack was Acid House and the E¹s were good.  There they met Mr C who joined the group.

They then toured the world presenting LIVE Electronic/Psychedelic /Progressive (back when that word actually meant something) Dance music to clubbers while incorporating spirituality and socio-political issue into their lyrics.

In 1989, they burst into the scene with the single “Pro-gen”.  It sold over 100,000 copies and was played by djs everywhere.  Two years later, the track STILL had power so they re-released it as “Move Any Mountain Pro gen ‘91”. It is still one of their signature tracks.

The En-tact album followed and it reads as a whos who in the scene. Orbital, Paul Oakenfold, William Orbit, Graham Massey (808 State), Evil Eddie Richards, Renegade Soundwave, Jack Dangers (Meat Beat Manifesto), Beatmasters and Lenny D all produced tracks.

The Boss Drum album followed in 1994 and had huge smashes like “L.S.I.”, ”Ebeneezer Goode” and the title track but for me, it is “En-tact” that provides not only an outstanding history lesson but is a damn good album start to finish. A rarity these days!
